Our cacao (including award-winning beans) comes currently from the heart of Peru & Ecuador, with connections in Mexico and more regions to come. We work with farmers, trusted partners and Indigenous communities who cultivate traditional, sustainable cacao varieties. This supports local livelihoods, preserves native cacao heritage and ensures fair and transparent compensation for their harvests.

Why Use Whole Bean Cacao
Anima Cacao is made from whole, minimally processed cacao beans. Unlike cacao powder or store-bought hot chocolate, it contains the highly-priced cacao butter, along with naturally occurring antioxidants, theobromine, minerals and healthy fats.
Cacao powders are made by stripping out the cacao butter, a process that reduces both flavour and many of cacao’s beneficial compounds. Keeping the bean intact is what gives whole bean cacao its richer, smoother, more chocolatey taste and its distinctive feel that that uplifts.

We’re Mel & Nat, childhood friends from Davos, Switzerland who have shared countless cups of cacao, deep conversations and a love for the way this plant brings warmth, connection and presence into our lives. Our journey began unexpectedly in Mexico, where we got matching tattoos of cacao beans intertwined with symbols of connection - the very region that would later become the home of our favourite Mexican cacao. That was the moment the seed of Anima Cacao was planted.
Anima” means spirit/soul in Latin, and that is what we are here to share: the spirit of cacao.

Sourced from a farm in Los Rios, Ecuador, this cacao (multiple international award winner) comes from traditional family harvests with over 100 years of history. Guided by organic principles and circular farming practices, the farm is deeply committed to sustainability and full traceability from tree to cup.

CACAO CRIOLLO PERU
Grown in the lowland rainforest of northern Peru, this Criollo Cacao carries the same ancient genetics as those once cultivated near the sacred spiral temple of Montegrande in Jaén, Cajamarca over 5,000 years ago. Grown by farming families who follow ancestral, lunar-based practices, it grows under the shade of native trees like banana, laurel and pacae, in harmony with the forest. A fine aroma Cacao 100% native & sustainable.
Cacao is believed to have originated in the Amazon Rainforest thousands of years ago. It was cultivated by ancient cultures, including the Mayans and Incas, who considered cacao a sacred fruit and a gift from the gods. Cacao beans were used as currency and in ceremonial rituals.

PERU CHUNCHO CACAO
Native ancestral variety from the world’s highest-grown cacao forests, traditionally cultivated at 1,600 meters above sea level, beneath the heights of Machu Picchu It is one of the oldest and most unique varieties, originally domesticated by the Matsigenka people and their ancestors. During the Inca Empire, it was highly valued and widely traded.
The Matsigenka selectively propagate trees with desirable traits, such as aromatic pulp, using low-intensity agroforestry methods. This approach maintains genetic diversity and supports local pollinators. The beans, processed minimally, retain a mild flavor with subtle fruity notes, reflecting the variety’s adaptation to its environment.
Chuncho cacao originates from a centuries-old symbiotic relationship with the Matsigenka (Machiguenga), an Indigenous Amazonian people of the Arawak linguistic family inhabiting the Manu Biosphere Reserve and Upper Urubamba River Basin in southeastern Peru. Genetic and anthropological evidence confirms their cultivation of Theobroma cacao -the Chuncho variety- since at least the 16th century, predating European contact.

MEXICAN CRIOLLO
This Mexican cacao is sourced from an award-winning farm nestled in the lush, volcanic foothills. The cacao is shade-grown using sustainable agroforestry, made with traditional methods and was awarded Gold & Silver at the Cocoa of Excellence Awards.
It is made from rare criollo beans (porcelana blanca to be specific) celebrated for their bright, fruity flavour and a creamy finish with subtle nutty notes. There is no other cacao quite like it.
This cacao is smooth, bold and naturally rich in antioxidants and other essential nutrients, including theobromine - nature’s gentle stimulant.

40 ml milk (we like oat milk)
1-2 tsps sweetener (of your choice)
Pinch salt (this rounds out the bitterness)
